General
What version of Photoshop do we use?
The company works and plays in the Adobe Creative Cloud and therefore uses the most recent release of all of the Adobe CC products.
What happens to an image when I want to change it from the original picture size to fit a specific size?
The best thing to do is to produce your artwork to the size of print you are ordering. In this way you can check to make sure that it is nice and crisp. If we find in the preliminary file review that there is a problem with the artwork which we feel is not going to make you happy... we will not print it until our concerns are brought to your attention, corrected and/or you approve it to be printed. Sometimes we might misinterpret a desired effect; in this way, you will always have the final say.
What is the typical distance that the picture will be viewed?
Although this might seem unimportant upfront, many users will not have the highest resolution cameras or pictures. If the viewing distance is known, then there is more flexibility with sizes for a given picture. For example, if you want to have a finished piece of 40" x 30" (width by height), the minimum viewing distance should be 35" or greater.
Will my photo be altered in the final production?
We will not crop any photos or artwork unless you wish us to do so.
Do you offer Photoshop / Illustrator services?
We do offer this service at a separate rate of $50.00 USD per hour. Please notify us at the time of placing
your order that you wish us to make ready your artwork for submission to manufacturer.
Upon receipt of your
uploaded file, you will be prompted to pay for 1 hour’s work in advance; with the balance being paid upon our
completion of the work based on a timesheet. Artwork will then be sent to you for final approval; final submission
will occur once all fee’s and authorizations are received by us.
An example would be if you have an image but don’t know Photoshop and want us to prepare the Artwork for a Triple Layer
Laminated Print.
Can the glass or image be scratched?
No, not under normal handling conditions. If you are able to scratch the image, then you have scratched the glass not the image. Unmatched resistance to scratching, acid, UV and weather.
How do I clean my glass art print?
Glass prints are like any glass product. Customers can use any glass cleaning products on the front and back of the glass. Caution should always be taken when cleaning any glass products. Do not use any chemicals or solvents on the glass. White Vinegar and Water in a 1:1 ratio used with lint free microfiber cloth are probably the best combination to use to clean glass and not leave fibers or residue.
What type of glass does the company use?
All images are printed on crystal clear low iron glass which is the clearest glass available.
Starphire, Ultra-White, Krystal Klear or Opti-White are some of the clearest, low iron content and colorless
glass names offered within the Architectural glass industry.
Alternative glass can be custom ordered upon request.
Clear Float Glass (green tint in the glass) is just one example, as well as, grey, blue, or green tinted glass.
Special Order tinted glass requirements would initiate a Custom Order process.
Please use the
Contact
page to specify all details and we will respond with a Custom Quote.
How long to get a glass art print created and delivered?
Prints are typically shipped within five (5) to six (6) weeks depending on the nature of the glass art print and current production schedules. Some custom orders can take longer due to extra file work to get the final image just right. Any delays will always be communicated to you.
How do you package the glass art print?
Since we print on glass, the company is incredibly sensitive to breakage.
Special packaging has been designed to accommodate international, domestic and local shipping.
All large prints are shipped in custom made wooden crates.
What is Tiling?
Tiling is when you spread an image over multiple glass prints. Drop-on-Demand precision printing
enables edge–to-edge printing, allowing for a continuous flow of the artwork allowing it to span
however many surfaces are required.
If you don’t know how to create "tiled" artwork, our proprietary software will automatically "tile"
an image with absolute perfect registry, nothing is lost.
I am a Building Contractor, can I order a project through here?
Illuma Glass is primarily about servicing the Professionals involved in the Art/ Photography / Interior Décor
and Design markets specifically; however, we are capable of overseeing and managing any project.
The staff at Illuma Studios has a long history in the fenestration and building construction industries with
ties to some of the finest quality architectural glass manufacturers and installers in the world.
We're happy to help in any way we can, so if it's beyond our scope we'll make sure to introduce you to
someone who can handle your needs very well.
Please use
Contact
page to communicate
basic information and we'll get right back to you.
Can I hang the print outside?
The important thing here to note is the term "in-glass", just as it suggests, the image is actually baked into the glass, some say "infused" into the glass; which makes it ideal for both external and internal applications. It will not scratch, peel or fade over time, which elevates this above all other printed glass to Archival quality, originally designed for sustainable Architecture.
Is there a minimum size?
Yes. The smallest size you can print it 12" x 12"
Is there a maximum size?
Yes. We say 100" x 168" (width or height) for printing and you cannot exceed 60" either width or height if doing a multi-layered piece, which is the maximum for laminating.
Is there a minimum quantity I have to order?
The only minimum applied has to do with Image processing. There is a 3 square foot minimum per image. This is especially relevant if you're doing a multi-print composition vs. a multi-print tiled composition. So, yes, to be clear, there is a 3 square foot minimum per print per image.
How many layers can I laminate?
As many as you want. Technically, there is no limit to this. Standard for Illuma in the Designer is 2 to 3 layers of ¼ thick glass; additional layers require custom quoting. Please use Contact page to communicate specifications and we"ll follow up right away.
How do you know which way the image I upload is to be printed?
We should be able to tell from the artwork itself; but if you’re providing dimensions we always request that you communicate these Width by Height.
What is Ceramic Ink?
Digital ceramic inks are the only ceramic inks developed specifically for digital inkjet,
drop-on-demand printing. A true glass ink, designed specifically for glass printing.
These inks contain special sub-micron glass particles and inorganic pigments, and are fused into
the glass during the tempering or annealing process.
This means you can create vivid,
durable designs that last as long as the glass itself. Important to note as well is these are
environmentally friendly / heavy metal-free inks. They do not contain
lead cadmium metal.
What does Tempering mean?
It means the glass has been “heat strengthened” so that if broken, it will shatter into little smooth pebbles and not sharp shards. It is considered “safety glass” and is the same technology as is used for shower enclosures and car windshields as examples.
Once a piece has gone through the tempering process it is considered a finished piece and cannot be altered in any way ie: holes added, etc., so be sure to think through all aspects of your project prior to ordering. We'll raise any issues we see prior to file submission to the manufacturer.
Can it be used to make signs with?
Graphic designers use it for the purpose of communicating brands, logos, signage, messages, it can be used to convey inspirational messages, directional information, whatever your project needs are!
What about reproduction of fine details? Can it do this?
Absolutely. We offer unmatched print quality in-glass with up to 720 dpi and micro-drop precision. Makes for a very “crisp” image or sharp line. Revolutionary real-time drying optimizes print quality. It enables flawless prints that require precise fine detail, small print, accurate color matching and seamless color transitions.
About the ink, can you make it thicker in places? Like if you have places you don’t want light to show thru?
Great question, it’s true, there will be times or areas where you want to have control over the light.
The good news is opacity control with our image processing software provides control over the ink density of the
printed layer.
By controlling the opacity you can produce a smooth transition across the full 0-100% gradient bar
using white ink. This enables a smoother print texture and extends the gray levels. Just like in Photoshop, whatever you
send over to us, our proprietary software will translate it for the printer and apply as much or as little ink as you have requested.
What about printing skin tones?
6 color ink printing for a wide spectrum of colors available. The ability to produce extended color shades and Pantone colors too. In short, it is possible to achieve natural skin tones, homogenous solids and super-smooth gradients.
How thick is the glass?
These are the actual sizes that are most commonly used.
¼″ / 6mm
⅜″ / 10mm
½″ / 12mm (Standard Thickness of Double Laminated)
¾″ / 19mm (Standard Thickness of Triple Laminated or Custom Order)
How do you know what a print weighs?
For the most part, the glass industry speaks in terms of square footage/ square cm. So we too deal in this unit of measure (UM). We calculate the weight of the prints this way.
-
1/4″ is 3/2lbs per square foot
-
3/8″ is 5.2lbs per square foot
-
1/2″ is 6.2lbs per square foot
-
3/4″ is 10lbs per square foot
How do you know the total square feet?
Simple math equation like this: (Width in Inches X Height in Inches) divided by “144“ equals the Total Square Feet.
What file types do you accept?
All common Bitmap formats: BMP, JPEG, JPG, TIFF, PSD(Adobe Photoshop), PDF / EPS.
For Vector formats: All(Adobe Illustrator), CDR (CorelDRAW), DXF (AutoCAD), PDF/EPS.
Etch ink, what is it?
Creates the frosted look and feel of acid etching and/or sandblasted glass without masking, peeling or health hazards.
The only solution for colored etch appearance. This proprietary ink enables versatile etch effects that provide varying
degrees of privacy, light diffusion and sun control. Ideal for intricate etch graphics and patterns, by the way,
it looks amazing when combined in a Multi-Layered Print.
The best part of it is that it’s infused into the glass so no longer a magnet for dirt and fingerprints!
Are there other types of inks available?
Yes, but they’re more for the Architectural market or end users, but just so you have an idea of how awesome this printer is, they are:
Conductive Ink
A flexible, environmentally friendly and cost effective way to add electrical functionality to glass.
-
Silver nano-particle ink provides efficient electricity conduction

Isn’t glass fragile?
Not as much as you would think. Have you ever wondered why there are so many glass sky scrapers and super-structures? The simplest answer is because glass is strong. Super strong, simple to work with, energy efficient and is extremely versatile, not to mention sustainable, long lasting and best of all... translucent!
What about color matching?
Our integrated glass design software for glass printing provides advanced image processing for high-quality, accurate printing in-glass. With this glass printer software, we can meet your color matching requirements, enabling us to confidently print any design on glass, and any photorealistic image. Likewise, the software enables us to process and print patterns on glass, whether single-color or multi-color.
What are other features of our software?
Well, we like to think of it as the last defense to insure perfection prior to printing. It is highly sophisticated and prepares the submitted artwork into language the printer can understand; also, it can achieve certain project goals easier than we can on our own. Here are some of the other features:
-
Advanced, automatic, color separation optimized for transparent media
-
Ensures repeatable, consistent results
-
Pattern Generator Plug-in for Adobe Illustrator enabling us to create any repetitive pattern design in seconds, according to functional and design specifications

Can I cancel my order?
Illuma Glass reviews all art files prior to submitting them to the manufacturer; which happens during a 48 hour cancellation grace period. If you have not heard from us during this time; then all is well with your file(s) and we are proceeding with the order. Cancellations or changes will no longer be accepted once the order has been placed with the manufacturer and is in the queue to run through the image processing phase.
Can I see a proof of my art work prior to printing?
Illuma Glass reviews all art files prior to submitting them to the manufacturer; which happens during a 48 hour cancellation grace period. If you have not heard from us during this time; then all is well with your file(s) and we are proceeding with the order. Cancellations or changes will no longer be accepted once the order has been placed with the manufacturer and is in the queue to run through the image processing phase.
Can I get a small sample printed of my art piece?
Yes, you can and we certainly advise doing this if your finished product is very big and expensive
or if you’ve really experimented with the Artwork, Layering, Opaqueness and/or are in need of
specific Color matching.
The smallest size for any one side is 12″ and as with all the small prints,
there is a standard minimum charge of 3 square feet; waved based on overall size of finished piece.
Just know, there is nothing cheaper about smaller pieces other than less glass, less weight, etc.,
The amount of work involved is the same.
That said, we will review all sample requests and costs with the manufacturer in relation to the project itself. If it is very complex then we would highly advise a sample and will work with you to acquire one to insure your satisfaction prior to a big piece being made.
Remember, a new medium demands experimentation and we encourage it... Art happens this way... we also want you to be delighted with the final piece. Plan accordingly though, as the sample will go into the queue along with other orders. At this time, there is no specific sampling process that can expedite delivery of samples. They are subject to the same manufacturing lead time of 5 weeks; but we will overnight them once they are received at no additional cost to you.
How do I plan hole placement?
Holes can be ¼″, ½″, ¾″, 1″, 1 ¼″, 1 ½″,
1 ¾″, 2″
Very important to note when laying out images and artwork if planning on drilling holes; the placement
of the hole is 3 times the diameter of the hole itself from edge of glass.
The need to drill holes is as varied as the print possibilities; so please provide template for hole placement as one of your file layers to insure we get it right and no processing time is lost to this.
How are the edges finished?
All Glass Art Prints have polished/sanded edges as is standard with Tempered Glass, as Straight Edge Polishing. Special Beveling or Shape Polishing is available, so if preference not shown on site please do not hesitate asking us. Special shapes and/or edge finishes may require custom quoting, possibly resulting in longer manufacturing lead time for delivery.
How do you ship?
The company has standardized using Canadian Post, United States Post and Federal Express, but alternative shipping arrangements can be made if required. If you want to ship on your own carrier, we can provide approximate crate/package size to help get you better pricing. Please make note of this on the Upload form; so we know how to respond appropriately and assist in these arrangements.
How long will my order take to be delivered?
All orders are FOB Canada and will ship between five (5) to six (6) weeks. Each order is treated equally and enter the file conversion queue in the order they were received. The manufacturer does not allow expedites, so please plan accordingly. Add your shipping time onto the production time to estimate delivery. Keep in mind that production times are long because there is a considerable process involved with printing on glass.
Can you ship internationally?
Yes, we ship to anywhere in the world and Federal Express handles all the brokerage and duty services as part of the shipping fees.
Why don’t we offer any shipping alternatives other than Federal Express Ground?
Simply answered, cost! Air costs pretty much triple shipping costs. But, if you require some rush order, we would be happy to accommodate your requirements. Shipments outside of North America will ship air.
How much does shipping cost?
Shipping prices will vary based on the destination, size of glass art print and the level of service.
The shipping table below provides you with some “guidelines” based on Federal Express Ground (4 days).
International shipments, those headed overseas actually end up on International Priority which is 4 days as well.
The package sizes are the three (3) main boxes that we use; therefore, the price could be slightly less for some sizes.
An exact shipping quotation can be obtained by selecting your image (or upload your own), mounts and checking out.
A final quotation will be provided without moving to the credit card process. All prices include applicable taxes,
duties and brokerage fees which are handled by Federal Express.
Destination is one factor, but shipping costs are dependent on several other factors as well (1) Glass art print size, (2) Weight of print and (3) Shipping service level. As you can imagine, the larger the print, the more it weighs, you will have the opportunity to choose carrier with options as part of the checkout process.
Is there a manufacturer warranty?
The manufacturer offers satisfaction guarantee that your printed glass will be free from defects with consideration for natural glass issues such as bubbles or natural conditions of glass, dust particles, unless said conditions impede proper viewing of the printed glass.
What's your return policy?
First off... We Want You To Love It!
But we’re reasonable and also human! If in fact something is wrong, we will do whatever it takes
to right that wrong.
We simply ask that any problems be communicated to us within 48 hours of delivery in writing via email using
the
Contact Us
page on this website.
What should you expect from a glass art print?
Most obvious answer is “Translusence”... there is an ethereal quality to a glass print.
Printing on glass is a unique and new alternative medium for digital images to be printed on. Do not expect the exact same effect as a canvas, metal or paper printed image. In fact, printing on glass allows you to exceed typical size constraints associated with traditional mediums.
What produces the best prints?
Anything that can be digitized can be printed, this isn’t about just Photography.
But not every image is right for this medium; or might need adjustments made to make it right.
Images with fine details and or many shades of colors are better handled in larger prints.
Black and whites always look fantastic due to the nature of the ceramic inks.
Try to avoid fluorescent and very bright colors, please review carefully to the
Color section of this
Info
page in order to fully understand what is possible prior to shopping for subject matter.
What affects the quality of smaller prints?
Smaller prints (12″ x 12″) with fine details or many color shades tend to print with grainy results at 454dpi. You can imagine a square inch in a 12″ x 12″ has much more information than 1 square inch from a 40″ x 30″. Abstract images or images with fewer details look great in smaller sizes as well as larger sizes.
What makes the best quality?
Please review carefully all color information or ask any color questions in order to fully understand how to properly choose the right image to reproduce with this technology. Not all images are going to work without concessions; but more importantly, when done correctly, you will exceed all expectations because there’s no other medium that will give you what glass can!
Can you do Black and White or Sepia glass prints?
Yes, converting a digital image to black and white or Sepia creates an excellent glass art print.
Can I leave a solid border to simulate a Matt?
Yes, of course. Just prepare your file accordingly. Remember this is edge to edge printing so your Artwork
can be laid out to accommodate whatever size border you wish to surround it with, including total translucence.
If you position your imagery in the center of the overall size, if you leave a border without any color in it;
then that will not be printed on and will create a clear glass border.
Likewise, any solid color will create the illusion of a Matt, you could even simulate a cut bordered edge
Can I send you a photo?
Yes. It’s part of the ordering process. Whether you're wanting a Custom Quote or you’re completing your order; we need you to send us the Art! There are several ways to upload Artwork to us to review prior to purchasing.
Where can I get a good photo or digital image?
Check out our Pinterest board where Artists are welcome to Pin their work and also share Glass Art Print installations. These pins will lead to their websites, online portfolios or Illuma Glassworks gallery.
As you know, there are many online image sources available. License fees will range from very expensive to free, but just focus on finding that special image that satisfies your goals. Once chosen, buy it, download it and then send it to us with your order!
Will the company print any image uploaded?
No. Due to copyright reasons and laws across North America, as well as, complete respect for the originators, we will not print copyrighted materials or anything found to be illegal in content, pornographic, commits libel or slander, contains discriminatory content or violates civil rights of any kind. If you’ve purchased it from one of the professional sites then you know what your rights are and more than likely you have permission to reprint it. But best to make sure to read the fine print.
Many things are in the Public Domain; but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a Trust Fund or a family somewhere involved. We find it’s always best to get appropriate permission.
If you use images or photos to make a new piece of Art; they can also evaluate what you’ve created in comparison with the originals and provide you with the security of knowing that you’ve created an original piece; or they’ll send you back to the drawing board if it too closely resembles the originals.
When you submit your Artwork through the creation/purchase process; you will be asked if you have the right to reproduce the work being submitted and as such take full responsibility if at any time there is a dispute or question as to ownership.
